The 6-month study looked at how daily blueberry consumption affected 138 obese and overweight 50 to 75-year-old individuals who had metabolic syndrome. The researchers compared the benefits of consuming 150-gram portions to 75-gram portions. The blueberries were consumed in freeze-dried form with a placebo group consuming a purple-colored alternative made of artificial flavorings and colors.
It was found that consuming 1 cup of blueberries daily resulted in sustained arterial stiffness and vascular function improvements that contributed to a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk by 12 to 15%.
